ABOUT THE EVENT:
We are excited to announce that Dr. Sean Schowalter and Dr. Mike Harbus of Mt. Sinai will be presenting on Treatment for Elbow Pathology and Review of Spinal Imaging.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- The Participant will be able to demonstrate understanding of basic elbow pathologies such as lateral epicondylitis, medial epicondylitis, radial tunnel syndrome, distal biceps tendinopathy.
- The participant should be able to describe various treatment for these pathologies including PT, counterforce bracing, steroid injections, needle tenotomy, shockwave, and PRP.
- Identify the pros and cons of various treatment modalities such as steroid injections, shockwave, and PRP.
- The participant will be able to demonstrate an understanding of x-ray/MRI spinal imaging.
- The participant should be able to identify and recognize spinal pathologies.
- The participant should identify the pros and cons of different PT protocols/treatments.
SPEAKER BIOS:
Dr. Michael Harbus is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Rehabilitation and Human Performance at Mount Sinai who specializes in interventional pain management. He focuses on using minimally-invasive, non-operative techniques to treat pain originating from the back, neck and joints. Included among the procedures offered by Dr. Harbus are fluoroscopically-guided spinal injections (epidural steroid injections, medial branch blocks, radiofrequency ablation), ultrasound guided injections, peripheral joint injections, peripheral nerve blocks, sympathetic blocks, injections for headache and spinal cord stimulation. Dr. Harbus is double-board certified in pain medicine and physical medicine and rehabilitation.
Dr. Harbus is a graduate of Amherst College. He received his medical degree from New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Following this, he completed an Interventional Pain Medicine fellowship at Montefiore Medical Center. Prior to rejoining Mount Sinai as a faculty member, Dr. Harbus was in private practice. Dr. Harbus has published multiple articles, written multiple book chapters, has presented locally and nationally at numerous conferences, and was recently lead editor of a textbook, A Case-Based Approach to Neck Pain.
Dr. Harbus believes in alleviating pain for his patients by using interventional techniques, pharmacotherapy, physical therapy and by having collaborative discussions about lifestyle. He is dedicated to providing customized treatment plans for each of his patients, taking into account their functional status and goals.
Dr. Sean Schowalter is a distinguished sports physician specializing in the nonoperative management of musculoskeletal conditions. With expertise in treating a broad spectrum of issues - ranging from ligament and tendon injuries to joint pain, arthritis, back pain, and localized nerve injuries - Dr. Schowalter caters to athletes, active individuals, and those seeking to enhance their physical activity. He is committed to developing personalized treatment plans for each patient, combining therapies, medications, and procedural interventions to alleviate pain, restore function, and enhance mobility.
Dr. Schowalter earned his medical degree with honors from Boston University and completed his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) at Harvard/Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital. During his residency, he was honored with the Resident Teacher of the Year Award and received a distinction in musculoskeletal ultrasound. He further honed his expertise with fellowship training in Sports Medicine and Interventional Spine at Mount Sinai Hospital.
Currently, Dr. Schowalter serves as an Assistant Professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, where he also directs the PM&R residency ultrasound program. In addition, his role extends as one of the official team doctors for USA Fencing and International Sumo. His special interests include diagnostic ultrasound, ultrasound-guided procedures, and regenerative medicine techniques such as platelet-rich plasma, shockwave therapy, Tenex, and prolotherapy.
An accomplished author, Dr. Schowalter has contributed numerous articles and book chapters to journals within Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine.
